Trekking Cordillera Huayhuash 15 Days
Cordillera Huayhuash is known as one of the most beautiful treks in the world. Due to high altitude passes, it is not an easy trek, but the spectacular views over the surrounding mountains, turquoise blue lakes and impressive landscapes totally pay off the effort.
Itinerary:
Day 1: Acclimatization - Puka Ventana
Hike to the Puka Ventana (“red window”) outside of tow, where you’ll get great views of the entire
Cordillera Blanca range from North the South. Spend the night in your Huaraz hotel.
Day 2: Huaraz - Churup 4450 m
Hike to the turquoise waters of Laguna Churup (4500 meters), approximately 5
hours of hiking round trip. Return to Huaraz, night in hotel.
Day 3: Huaraz - Chiquian - Llamac 3300 m
Let the trekking Begin! Depart Huaraz for the town of Llamac, a ride that lasts about
5 hours. Day hike option or explore the town. Altitude of Camp: 3300 meters.
Day 4: Llamac 3300 m - Pocpa - Cuaterhuain/Matacancha 4180 m
Llamac to Matacancha by way of Pocpa. Duration: 5-6 hours. Altitude of Camp: 4100 meters.
Day 5: Matacancha 4180 m – Lake Mitucocha 4200 m
We start our trek with a zig-zag track that leads up to Cacananpunta pass at 4750 m. We descend through a large picturesque valley that opens to a beautiful lake Mitucocha (4200 m), where we set our camp right at the lake banks. We then do a lateral trek on the moraine. 5 hours aprox.
Day 6: Mitucocha Lake 4200 m - Carhuacocha Lake
Laguna Mitacocha to Laguna Carhuacocha. Two options for the route, a gradual easy pass on the main trail or an off-trail adventure on steeper terrain with a beautiful lake and a high rocky pass. Duration: 6-7 hours. Altitude of Camp: 4180 meters.
Day 7: Rest day in Carhuacocha lake
One of the more beautiful view of all the campsites in the Huayhuash, also a great place to fish, take a day hike to one of the lakes under Jirishanca, visit with the locals, or rest!
Day 8: Carhuacocha Lake 4100 m – Huayhuash 4350 m
This is a long day of walking, starting at the beginning of Queropalca valley. We ascend up to Siula pass (4800 m) with excellent views over the surrounding mountains. Yerupaja (6634 m) is the second highest peak in Peru and Siula (6356 m) is an impressive mountain that was made famous by Joe Simpson’s book Touching the Void in which he recounts his successful but disastrous and nearly fatal climb to this mountain. We also get excellent views over Carnicero and Trapecio. We descend to Huayhuash to set our camp. 7-8 hours aprox.
Day 9: Huayhuash 4350 m - Viconga 4500 m
This day we reach the most southern point of Huayhuash mountain range, ascending to Huayhuash pass at 4700 m. We get excellent views over Cordillera Raura mountain range at one side and southeastern face of Trapecio at the other. We descend south and walk along lake Viconga until we reach thermal baths. This is a great opportunity to rest and take a relaxing hot bath. 4-5 hours aprox.
Day 10: Viconga 4500 m – Elephant camp 4600 m
We will start this day’s trail towards Cuyoc Pass (5000 m) – the highest point of this trekking. It offers an impressive panoramic view of Huayhuash Mountains. We will descend through Huanacpatay Valley towards our next camping place. Duration: approx. 7 hrs.
Day 11: Elephant camp 4600 m – Cutatambo camp 4000 m
After an early breakfast, we will start our walk through a narrow valley till reaching the No Name Pass. From there, we will have a magnificent view towards the North of the Huayhuash Chain, of some mountains like Yerupaja, Sarapo, Stakra, Huacris, and Siula. Later, we will descend to our camping.
Day 12:Rest day in Cutatambo
Beautiful day hike options up to Laguna Sarapococha or to the col called ‘Gran Vista’ (‘Great View’)we will see west face of siula grande(where the alpine epic ‘Touching the Void’ unfolded)if you have the energy to make the climb. Stunning views in all directions, this valley is one of the less-visited and most visually rewarding in the range.
Day 13: Cutatambo – Huayllapa Village 3500 m - Huatiac
Cutatambo to Huatiac, just below the Tapush pass. Duration: 5-7 hours. Altitude of camp 4300-4600 meters.
Day 14: Huatiac - Tapush pass - Yaucha pass - Jahuacocha
Hike to Laguna Jahuacocha over the Tapush pass. Duration: 6 hours. Altitude of Camp: 4060 meters.
Día 15:Lake Jahuacocha 4050 m – Huaraz 3100 m
The last day we descend through Jahuacocha valley and then walk up to reach Pampa Llamac at 4250 m. Crossing the pass, we descend to Llamac village where we take a bus to Huaraz. 6 hours.
